Indonesia
Indonesia was my first stop in Asia. I was drawn to this country specifically for it's volcanoes and unique culture. My three weeks were spent between three seperate islands: Gili Trawangan, Bali, and Lombok. Lombok appealed to me the most as I was able to climb Mount Rinjani, the country's second largest active volcano, having last erupted in November 2015. This climb required a 3,100 meter elevation gain in around 8 hours, with the final 3 hours starting in the dark at 3am in order to reach the 3,726 meter summit for sunrise. The views up so high were absolutely spectacular and exactly what I had been looking for when I decided to visit Indonesia. From Lombok I travelled back to Bali to summit my second volcano, Mount Batur. Although not nearly as high, standing at only 1,717 meters, watching the sun rise from above the clouds was still stunning. Deciding I should explore something other than volcanoes, I rented a motorbike for a week and biked around the East coast, discovering untouched villages, lush green rice terraces, beautiful moutains and sea views, as well as many ancient temples.
